“Welcome home. How did you find your working holiday? Where have you been? Is there anything special about your trip? How much money do you bring back from the trip?” A lot of friends wonder how I spend a year in Australia and how I am getting on. You know, I don't say much. I think it’s much better to express myself in writing than in speaking. I had a great year.
One year ago, a girl without much confidence thought herself all bad. No courage, no boyfriend, no competitive capability…Yes, it’s me. I'd done the same job for years and felt it was time to move on. It was time I did something for myself! I went to Australia with 3 girls. I did 6 jobs there in total, including strawberries picker and packer, babysitter, cleaner, cashier, bakery staff, and fruit packer again. All these jobs are illegal because the employers pay less than the minimum wage.
Our first stop was Perth. We got the hardest job at the beginning – picking strawberries. You have to bend over, squat down or kneel to move down the endless rows of strawberries. Your knees must turn red and your feet are easily numb after work. We also need to pick strawberries on rainy days, no matter how heavy it is. Sometimes, we had big old fat rain, even the brief was soaked through. It may be boring but at least it pays well.
The boss is a nice guy. But it turns out that he was caught when someone tipped the department of immigration off that he was an illegal immigrant. He is a tough young man. I think repatriation is just one of the vicissitudes of his life. At that time, I made a lot of funny friends who are from Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Hong Kong. And I met my dream man there.
He’s the 1st dream man I met in my actual life. However, he is married. He is the most handsome Vietnamese I’ve seen. He looks a bit like 呂良偉. (呂良偉 is a Vietnam-born Hong Kong actor!) He’s strong. He’s kind. He is unassuming. Even though he’s the son of the farmer, he still helped us a lot. One time, I didn’t go to work in the morning because of illness. He had sent his regards to me when he saw me. He is a perfect gentleman. What a pity I didn’t get a chance to take a picture with him.
